Battling Recession with Entertainment Franchises

We, Filipinos, have always been known to laugh our way through troubles. How many times in history did we make jokes out of repression, or sang songs to lift our spirits up during crises? In fact, it’s probably one of the reasons why we triumph over trials: we paint a silver lining on our clouds even before it actually materializes.

Now is no different time from before. We are in an economic crisis, and many businesses suffer from instability. There is one form of industry which stands firm despite the chaos, however. And that’s entertainment.

Entertainment is deeply embedded in our culture. The Filipino always finds a way to reward himself after all his toils. Whether it be a movie with the barkada, or sing-along session with the rest of the family, he makes it a point to entertain himself despite hard times. He makes it a point to amuse himself precisely because of the hard times.

Any entrepreneur with an eye for good business would see the recession not as a impenetrable wall, but rather a gate that opens to a market brimming with opportunities. How? Entertainment and leisure franchises. From magazines, to DVD rentals, karaoke lounges, and even family resorts — the options are all out there, waiting for good hands to take hold of them.

If you’re still in doubt, ask yourself. How many times did you opt to see a movie because you feel down? How many times did you have the urge to sing at the top of your lungs to chase your blues away? During those times, did it matter how much you spent? Exactly. The answer is no. To the Filipino, having no worries is priceless.

So what’s the world’s problem again? Ah yes, recession. Am I worried? Oh no. It’s nothing that a good movie or a good song can’t handle, and a good business can’t battle.
